| The Alliance for the Preservation and Protection of Appalachian Lands (APPAL) was formed in the summer of 1997 by residents of the Rocky Gap area of Bland County, Virginia. Having fought and repelled repeated assaults on their mountain home and way of life by urban America, including efforts to place solid waste landfills, nuclear waste dumps, and most recently a bitter seven year fight against a medical waste incinerator, residents now faced the threat of an American Electric Power 765 KV power line. Realizing this threat was just one more in a continuing pattern of environmental injustices and that these threats were regional in nature, APPAL grew to include citizens of Bland, Giles, Floyd, Tazewell, and Wythe Counties. | |||||||
