What You Can Do
There are a number of actions that individual citizens can take to stop this power line. The letter and phone call to your elected officials and state agencies is the most powerful weapon to stop this line. Please call and write. For further clarification of the issues go the 765 Kv issues page, State Corporation Commission The SCC is the state agency that regulates utilities in Commonwealth. The Commission consists of three appointed officials who make the final decision on whether to allow the 765 Kv power line or not. Issues that concern the SCC are the need for the power line, impact of route on cultural and environmental resources, deregulation, and eminent domain. The permanent staff of the SCC, headed by the Hearing Examiner, Howard Anderson, will make a recommendation to the Commission. Governor Governor James Gilmore does not have a direct executive role in this decision and will profess this very fact to avoid taking a stand. However, in the end all decisions of government are political and all politicians respond to those who elect them. Please write and call the governor on this issue. Delegate Thomas Jackson Tom Jackson has spoken against the power line and testified in such manner at the public hearing in Bland County. Write him to reinforce his stand and suggest he take a more active position. Senator Philip Puckett Senator Puckett testified at the public hearings in Bland and Tazewell and has suggested a moratorium on the power line to access the effects of deregulation and has also pushed new generation in the coal fields. Jefferson National Forest The role of the Jefferson National Forest is very important in this process. Bill Damon, Supervisor of the Jefferson and Washington National Forest, can deny AEP the right to build a power line across National Forest land. The Forest Service is also sensitive to the effect of the power line on adjacent private property, Congressman Rick Boucher Rick Boucher has taken a very active position in opposing this power line.
