Commissioners of the Revenue are the chief tax assessing officers in Virginias cities and counties. They administer the assessments for businesses and individuals in the following areas:
*Real estate taxes (in some cities and large suburban counties, assessors handle this function)
*Personal property taxes
*Business license fees
*Consumer utility taxes
*Machinery and tool taxes
*Merchant capital taxes
*Special taxes on meals, lodging and cigarettes
Commissioners also spend considerable time working on state income taxes, helping citizens complete their returns and performing initial processing prior to delivery of the forms to the State Department of Taxation.

performs advanced technical work in processing a variety of tax returns
may have full supervisory responsibility for a small staff
audits the more complex income, estimated, and personal property tax returns which do not conform to standard screening criteria, or which present unusual or difficult questions requiring advanced knowledge of tax regulations and procedures
assists taxpayers in completing and filing such returns
compiles and types a variety of reports
updates records by use of a computer terminal
assists in taxpayer mailings
performs other office duties as required

Qualification Guide:
knowledge of the statutes, forms and procedures relating to specific areas of tax collection and services
knowledge of office practices, equipment and supervision as required
ability to interpret and apply statutes and procedures to non-routine questions and problems
ability to work with public and/or subordinate staff as required
graduation from high school and post-secondary training and experience related to the positions duties preferably in accounting/statistical or analytical work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience

Job Content:
performs responsible technical and clerical support work in processing a variety of tax returns, and in assisting taxpayers with returns and related matters
audits income, estimated, and personal property tax returns against standard criteria
communicates with taxpayers regarding discrepancies, or to obtain additional information
prepares returns for further processing, and compiles necessary reports
answers taxpayers inquiries regarding a variety of tax-related matters
assists taxpayers in completing returns
processes abatements and exonerations
assesses personal property taxes using standard information sources such as Division of Motor Vehicle listings, and National Automobile Dealers Association and mobile home guide books

opens mail
composes and types correspondence
maintains files and prepares a variety of reports
performs a variety of typing and clerical duties supporting office operations
types a variety of letters, memorandums, reports, statements, bills, notices and forms
maintains related files,
performs file research, reference and verification
serves as receptionist
assists individuals both in person and on the telephone by answering questions and providing routine information
Qualification Guide:
