My Grand Daughter Jeanetta"
0000 Another Viewpoint by Jim Viers March 15, 2001
"Meet my New Grand Daughter Jeanetta Eusebio Maxamiliano

As you top the rise in the narrow road - laying below you is the land of the Masahua people. The neatly laid parcels of land are lined up in rows with small lakes interspersed to irrigate the fields. The view is reminiscent of a neatly arranged quilt crafted by a master seamstress.

They make their living by use of burro and horse as their fathers before them. They are some 260,000 strong. Here the white man's face is still a rarity, an intrusion into the norm of the people. The journey had been somewhat exhausting, as it had been my opportunity to travel in the back of a small pickup for the last 60 miles. This portion of the journey had not been kind to me. The roads being rough and with the topes being placed on the road where they would inflict the most pain on the unwitting traveler, I had pain in places where I had not known pain before.

Upon reaching our final destination it was a relief to stand on my own two feet again. It was a joy to re-aquain't ourselves with old fiends. After everyone had embraced everybody, and appropriate kissing on the cheek, with "God bless you" all around, we were welcomed into the humble house of the preacher, Antonio Eusebio Maxamiliano. The view to say the least was spectacular. The village lived up to its name. For it was situated high on the side of the mountain and the valley lay far below us with the mountain above reaching high into the sky. I can well understand why the ancient endigineous people chose this spot to live.

I had been invited to present the preachers new daughter to the congregation and ask God's blessing on her. She was all of six days old. Her eyes were coal black as was to be expected from her Indian hertigage. Her skin was ruby red, or as we would say, she was white. In the eyes of her people who were brown in color, this alone made his daughter special. Besides this, her hair was brown instead of the usual jet black . But the special aura of her person was further insured by her namesake. I was greatly honored I was informed that the child was to wear the name of my wife, "Jeanetta". There are other beautiful Masahua girls with lite skin and brown hair, but among all her people she alone will carry the name of Jeanetta.

As I held her lovingly in my arms she captured my affections with her tranquil appearance. It was as though her coal black eyes was peering into my inner being. Somehow the relationship between this small princess of San Felippi and this giant from Haysi were cemented togethere in that instant. Never will I forget that moment, and few days will pass that I don't think of this child who carries the name of the one I love most in this life. Now I know two Jeanettas. They both are very special to me. If the one who bears the namesake of the first, will grow to be half the women that my wife is, she will be a blessing to all who know her.

But in truth my friends every child born is special, regardless of name or race. I love the song, "Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world, red and yellow, black and white they are precious in his sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world".

(Mark 10:14 KJV) But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

After two days in the village, it was time for us to leave. We ate together, we prayed together, and we said our good byes. As we prepared to leave a vender of ice cream passed by on his bicycle. Everyone had their fill. It was a fitting conclusion to the end of what is always a special trip to San Felipe. But this time a part of me stayed behind. For Jeanetta Esubio Maxmiliano nust remain with her mother, Martha, her father, Antonio and her three brothers. Shall I see her again? Only God knows. But my life has been enriched by the knowing of this little princess of Mexico.
