Community Policing Unit

The Community Policing teams have worked together to proactively keep the public housing areas safe. The units have proven to be a great asset in community relations, and have been widely accepted by members of the housing communities. The resident officer and police sub-stations continue to be a positive aspect of the program. In addition to being a part of the public housing communities, the Community Policing teams are also providing services to businesses and other residential areas. Working in conjunction with the Community Relations Officer, they provide assistance to community organizations, with programs such as the Neighborhood Watch Program.

In 2004, the Department received a Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant that enabled the hiring of two new officers. These officers are utilized in supporting homeland security efforts and the Community Policing teams. Community based efforts through a local Weed and Seed organization secured federal grants in the fall of 2005 to enhance enforcement activities and support camera surveillance programs for high crime neighborhoods.
