These items were received from officers of the Kingsport Police Department, the Second Judicial Drug Task Force, and Special Agents of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. The Evidence/Property Unit received 4,265 items in 2007. This is a decrease of 233 items under totals for 2006. During the calendar year of 2007, the Evidence Custodian disposed of 2,697 pieces of evidence and found/abandoned property. The court case backlog as well as other factors is requiring additional space. The Evidence Officer has made a big effort to obtain destruction orders from officers so that additional space can be made. Most of the disposal for 2007 was from a backlog of several years. Additionally the Evidence officer serves as the Department’s Quartermaster, maintaining equipment, supplies and uniforms for the Department’s 111 sworn members. He also maintains equipment, supplies and uniforms for the Department's Volunteers and the Auxiliary Police Officers.
