Commitment Record for Samuel G. Allen
Samuel G. Allen, the first child of Thomas and Elizabeth Allen was listed as a stagecoach driver in the 1850 Virginia Census of Smyth County. However, on May 12, 1856, Samuel was committed as a lunatic to the Smyth County Jail under a warrant issued by three Justices of the Peace. This document can be found in Smyth County Court Order Book 10, Page 412. According to the Allen family Bible, Samuel G. Allen died in December of 1856, about seven months after his commitment. It is likely that he was still in the custody of the Smyth County jailor at the time of his death.
